1. Band Name? DEVIANT AMPS
2. Why so called? It’s short for deviancy amplification spiral. (Briefly, in case you don’t want to look it up, “deviancy amplification spiral is a media hype phenomenon defined by media critics as an increasing cycle of reporting on a category of antisocial behavior or other undesirable events”). OR, as it’s shortened, a great name for an indie psychedelic rock band.
3. Where From? Harlow
4. Line Up? Paul Woodwright – guitars and vocals. Martin Wheeldon – bass and vocals. Keith Chennery – drums.
5. Average Age? Old enough to know better, young enough to rock.
6. How long have you been together? Three years as a 3-piece.
7. You are influenced by, or would appeal to fans of….? We are influenced by all sorts of music but 60’s garage and indie rock tend to be our main ingredients to blend together. Our audience tends to reflect this with old and young enjoying it.
8. Your fans are mostly… A cross section of young and old rock heads. And “stoners”.
9. Any recordings? An ep, Giving It All Away, which is now download only and available for free from our website, and, in early 2008 we will be releasing an album, DEVIANCY AMPLIFICATION SPIRAL, which was recorded, mixed and mastered by ourselves on our own label, Damp Recordings.
10. What makes you different? We’re just trying to be ourselves rather than ‘a band that sounds like….’. The most significant moment came when the last guitarist left the band and we had a rehearsal as a 3 piece to honour a gig commitment. Suddenly it all fell into place. The freedom and space that being a three piece allowed was the most defining moment in the bands lifespan so far.
11. A song you wish you’d written? As a band, of course, My Way. Oh my god, our share of royalties…..!
12. Which of your songs is most likely to be a hit? Should that read most unlikely to be a hit? I guess, a song from the new album called “3º” would be the most likely contender.
13. Career highlight? Two things. Playing Mudfest, sorry, Wattsfest last summer. We were in the middle of recording when we decided to play this festival. It was one of those gigs where the whole thing fell into place and gelled. It was also a fabulously loud set up with some monster freaky light system. I think we’re still having to shout at bass player at rehearsals. He was deaf for days. Don’t try this at home without ear protection. Probably one of our best gigs so far. And, then, equally, the new album. We’ve always had trouble capturing the “Deviant Amp” sound using other studios and people so decided to invest in recording gear, mics, etc and do it ourselves even though none of us had any experience in how to do it. After lots of scrapped attempts we slowly found a way of getting what we wanted to tape and after a couple of abandoned mixes found the right formula for us. It very much captures our live sound and the dynamics in the songs.
14.Any good gig stories? Yeah, you bet! But I think we’ll save them for the biography and film that’s based on us, oh, and for when we’re dribbling pensioners reminiscing of the “good ‘ol glory days”.
15. So the moral of this story is....Never give up and keep true to yourself.
16. Gigs coming up? A FREE gig at The Four Lymes, Hawley, Dartford celebrating the release of album. Check web or myspace for further upcoming gigs and album release dates.
