★★★ POWER-POP TRIO The Feb21s from Essex mix a formidable sweat-inducing barrage of original songs that verge on Mod-infused R&B and garage punk. And very enjoyable it was I must say, having been fortunate enough to witness them practicing for next year’s gigs and recording sessions. “The songs came first when it was just me making some demos,” says The Feb’s Gary, “but now it’s exciting being a band proper, and the songs are really coming together live.”
The Feb21s sound is punchy and bright, and not unlike The Jam, especially when they do a Weller track – Motown too – plus a rare Kinks song. I can see them appealing to other men-of-a-certain-age into Weller, Mod and Punk: bass and drums are tight – that’s Dale Farrow and Gavin Webb – while songwriting vocalist Gary Kent has a warm tone, offset by his Telecaster scratchings. I suggest you listen out for The Feb21s in the future. Fab beginnings from a new Essex sweet three piece.
